I think it is obvious to all of us that cooperation with people might be tough. Even if you like people and you like the job you are doing.
For many years I tried, and nowadays I still try to read people and to remember as much as possible from their stories. And actually is never ending process. All people are different and working with them is also different.
This is why it is worth to be a flexible manager and use different styles of management. A smart manager can adjust own actions to a teammate. What I have also noticed for years is that some parts of work-relations can be the same, unchangeable. Three things that are so universal that fits everyone and in every situation. Let me share with you with these 3 golden rules.
1. Put yourself in someone shoes.
Do you have on your team employees with 9-5 attitude? Do you have in the team people whose behaviors sometimes goes into you?
You must realize that we do not have a control on others behaviors. But we can control over emotions. A good way to accept the situation would be putting yourself in someone else shoes. Just think, why your teammate behaves so and so, what would you feel being in his place? It is perfect to turn on your empathy. Empathy has a great influence on interpersonal contacts. It helps to understand people. It helps to create stronger, more open and honest relations. Identification of feelings and emotions can be useful to relieve the tension.
2. Say what you think and do it clearly.
If you face the situation that is not comfortable for you, you should act as fast as possible. Doing nothing might cost you too much and might be also against your personal rules. As the most important thing is to keep in with yourself. And this is not so important that you will hurt the person. Saying what do you want, but with using clear explanation is extremely worth. You know how to achieve the success in this situation? Tell what kind of change you would like to implement. Add explanation why do you think present solution doesn’t work. It would be perfect to add why your option is better. Open and honest communication is always a key to a success. You have to be assertive. Not only by telling ”No”, but also ”I think in a different way”.
3. Set the limits.
Setting the limits for yourself and other people that you are working with is really important and makes a difference from the first contact. This can make easier for both sides – your team and you to improve the cooperation. For example: what kind of information should be attached to the message? Where is the best time for meetings? Or how often are you going to discuss current employee’s progress? Managing the expectations of your team and honest information how do you achieve the highest efficiency brings the communication between all of you to another level. No irritation, no unpleasant situations. Of course, you don’t have to set up limits to everything, but it would be worth to choose few areas in the beginning.
You see, it is quite simple. You can improve relations with employees and the co-workers quick. You can base on the same values.
